PROMOTING READING HABITS AMONG TEENAGERS

Reading ardor is recognized as one of the predictors for academic achievement and as motivators for teenagers to be a life-long learners. Reading nurtures ones soul and mind. It provides us a bridge between the real world and the imaginative world. It helps in developing critical thinking, productive learning, and in visualizing a whole new world. It’s a way to get escape from the adversities of life and drown into the deep oceans of imagination and creativity. As William Somerset Maugham said, “To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life.”

It’s been observed that reading habit has been declining in the world since ages. On the other hand, browsing the net, chit-chatting on cellphones, movies and endless dramas has filled the minds of our youth. They are actually ignoring the most essential part of their lives that can help them to broaden their horizon.

It’s high time to think that how one can promote the habit of book reading among teenagers and can curtail the use of technology. So that the habit of reading would not vanish into thin air. Nurturing a love of reading in teenagers can be an invincible task for anyone, but with proper use of right techniques, one can easily turn their reluctant child into a little bookworm.

Reading should be promoted from the adolescent age till the ripe age. One should keep on reading, in order to keep on brightening their mind, visit the places that they have never visited before and to make themselves aware of the world surrounding them. In this regard parents and teachers can play a vital role. By picking their child’s favorite title and reading it to them. By exposing them to the varieties of genres one can stimulate the habit of reading among their children.

On the other hand, libraries can be of great help. A cozy environment, where one can find their adored piece of writings, where one in silence, lost oneself in the imagination and can directly have connection with the visualized world. Who doesn’t want to be a part of such kind of enticing environment? So, a library should be built in every corner of our surroundings.

In a nutshell, reading gives you wings to fly. So keep on reading and flying in the skies of fiction, drama, adventures, suspense and so on. It is suggested that reading habit should be inculcated in teenagers, in such a way that they find it exciting and a way to remove boredom.
